Counterbalance forklift Training
OSHA does require operators using a counterbalanced lift truck to have received lecture style or classroom training. They also require that a supervised driving course is finished along with periodic refresher training. There is no minimum time requirement for the supervised driving or classroom training. Moreover, there is no frequency mandated for the refresher training either.
Counterbalanced Forklifts
The weight of the counterbalance forklift is used to balance its load using its own weight. The forklift forks are in a fixed position but could be lowered and raised to secure and move cargo. The forks run parallel to the forklift's body. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration require that individuals who would be utilizing counterbalanced forklifts on the job be properly trained on the trucks while being in the kind of setting which they would be using them.
Classroom Training
Training either in a classroom or lecture style would offer lift truck and driver information for the truck you would be operating. Most training will include several aspects such as the weight and load capacity, height, how to fuel or charge the forklift. It includes how to gauge the time on the engine in addition to any forklift specific safety information like for example where to stand when walking around the truck. Either oral and/or written testing is part of the classroom training. There is no required minimum time for the training.
Supervised Driving
The forklift operator needs to learn how to utilize the counterbalanced lift truck while being supervised. The supervised driving has to take place in a place which reflects the environment the driver will be driving in. This atmosphere should include the kind of terrain she will be traveling on, have the same surrounding structures nearby, and the same vehicle and pedestrian traffic close by too. There is no required minimum number of hours the operator needs to drive while being supervised.
