Lift Truck Battery Safety
The huge industrial sized batteries used to run electric forklifts must be charged frequently and properly maintained. Safety procedures must always be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is vital to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
It is vital for employees working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG consist of safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect clothing and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash post must be situated near the charging place. The route to the station must not be blocked and a worker who is injured should be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging place within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery must be at the same amperage. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are prohibited near a battery and charging area. Never permit things such as matches or lighters to be utilized while an employee is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be properly ventilated. The recharging method can cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both toxic and explosive.
